What is the 65th wedding anniversary?
Sixty-five years qualifies for a message from the King. It is also the anniversary where the British list gives no material at all - which is not what the rest of the internet will tell you.
Sixty-five years of marriage is one of the three named anniversaries that qualifies for a message from the King. It is also the one where the British list has nothing to say, and almost nobody admits it.
The British list gives the 65th no material at all
Search for this anniversary and every result tells you the same thing: blue sapphire. Wikipedia says blue sapphire. The card shops, the gift sites and the rose growers all say blue sapphire, usually with a sentence about loyalty.
It is not on the British list. Debrett's runs the fives after year fifteen and sixty-five is not among them - not as blue sapphire, not as anything.
We went looking for where the blue-sapphire attribution comes from and could not trace it to any British authority. That is not the same as saying it is wrong; it is a genuinely established name, used widely and understood by everyone. It is to say that when a gift guide tells you the sixty-fifth "is" blue sapphire with the same confidence it tells you the fiftieth is gold, those two statements are not standing on the same ground. One is in Debrett's. The other is convention that grew without a documented source we could find.
Our anniversary lookup shows the sixty-fifth with no material for exactly this reason. A gap stated honestly is more useful than a gap filled in quietly.
It does qualify for the King's message
This is the part that matters more than the material, and it is not in doubt. The sixty-fifth is one of only three named anniversaries that qualifies, alongside the diamond wedding at sixty and the platinum at seventy - and every year after the seventieth qualifies too.
The message has to be applied for. Rather than repeat it here, the rule, the deadlines, the marriage-certificate requirement and the fact that the Palace makes no charge are all set out on the diamond wedding page.
What to give when the list is silent
The absence is oddly freeing. At sixty-five there is no traditional material anyone is obliged to honour, which removes the usual problem of buying something in a prescribed substance that the couple did not ask for.
Blue sapphire is a perfectly good answer if you like it - it is what everyone will assume you meant. Blue in any form reads the same way and costs a fraction. And ignoring the material question entirely is, at this anniversary specifically, the most defensible choice available to you, because there is no British tradition being set aside.
What sixty-five years does reward is specificity. The couple has been given things for six decades. What they have less of is anything that fixes the date itself.
Where sixty-five sits: between diamond at sixty and platinum at seventy - the only two neighbours it has, and both of them have a material.

Questions
Questions, answered
What is the 65th wedding anniversary material?
+
The British list does not give one. Debrett's runs every year to fifteen and then the fives, and the sixty-fifth is not on it. Blue sapphire is the name used almost universally elsewhere, including by Wikipedia, but we could not trace that attribution to any British authority - so it is established convention rather than a sourced tradition.
Is the 65th anniversary blue sapphire or not?
+
Call it blue sapphire if you like the name; everyone will understand you. Just know it does not carry the same standing as gold at fifty or diamond at sixty, both of which Debrett's does list. The honest position is that the British list is silent at sixty-five.
Does the 65th wedding anniversary get a card from the King?
+
Yes. It is one of only three named anniversaries that qualifies, with the diamond wedding at 60 and the platinum at 70, and every year after the 70th qualifies as well. The application deadlines and requirements are set out on our diamond wedding page.
What should you give for a 65th anniversary?
+
With no traditional material to honour, you are freer here than at any other milestone. Blue in some form reads as blue sapphire for a fraction of the cost, and ignoring the material question altogether is more defensible at sixty-five than anywhere else on the list, because there is no British tradition being set aside.
